In this essay I will be discussing and
analysing the different codes and conventions of factual programming from examples
I found of news and documentaries.
For my first news programme
I will be looking at “news round”, news round is a fun and educational news
programme for kids broadcasted on CBBC.
The presenter looks young
around there early 20s this helps to create a relationship if the young
audience diagram the ages of 12 to 16 as they Can relate to the figure that is
closer in age whereas shows such as Channel 4 would use an older person around
there early 30s to late 40s because this
gives The impression that they are wiser I would know more about the topic that
they are talking about however children need to look for a figure that is
somewhat relieved I can speak to them on their level and not come across as
being a parental figure Or teacher because they try to escape from that when
coming to watch TV.
The stage is set up is
different to what would stereotypically be seen in the news shows when watching
news programs such as BBC we see simple colour schemes that are not very
eye-catching where as a news round the colour palette is bright and attention
seeking which appeals to young audience. We also are used to seeing formal
dress codes such as suits that are dull coloured but the news around the
presenters casually dressed in jeans and shirts which further promote the fact
that this news programme is informal.
The so provides a lot of
visual content and interactive not as much scene of the presenter in the studio
this breaks up the show gives use something to visualise while hearing about
related issues, keeps the audience on track with the stories.
Field readers:
The news readers are quite
playful yet professional, they ensure that any language used will be understood
by children. The readers are well-spoken with a British accent which prevents
miscommunication to the younger audience. The field reporter provided more
information based on the brief summary made by the main anchor person.
Studio news reporters:
This programme ensures to
be visually entertaining so while the anchor-man or woman is reporting there is
a green screen/multi-screen background the place images and clips to maintain
the attention of the audience however not distracting from the stories being
reported. The presenters casually dressed in jeans and shirts which further
promote the fact that this news programme is informal.
Interview:
The interview consisted of
an individual with expert views back up with some facts which allowed them to
fairly discuss the topic. The presented askes detailed and specific questions
in ordered to gain a particular response
Report structure:
The programme began with
the anchor reading the headlines, then going back and reading the stories for
the headline with more information. We are given visuals that back up the
information given lastly was followed by the interviews. This structure was
simple and does not confuse the watch they also only read up to 3 stories
whereas as programmes like BBC news would have up to 6. I feel like this was
done to not overflow such a young audience with so much information that it
could be forgotten easily news is made to be discussed and shared.
Bias and impartiality:
The news being presented
has to be presented with factual contented and cannot be in-biased and include
ideas that come from one point of view. Anything reported this way would not be
news and would not be allowed. This may create controversy.
Diners, drive in and dives
Diners, drive in and dives
is a show hosted by Guy Fieri who travels across America to find some of the
best eateries and is aired on food network.
Documentary formats:
The formats that are presented in diners,
drive INS and dives are interactive, this is shown through the presenter Guy
Fieri’s direct communication to his audience. He talks directly to his audience
and interacts with members of the public to include more than one view that is
his own. It shows elements of an expository documentary because there is a
relationship with the images and clips shown of the foods and restaurants
linked to the voice over of guy informing us about the establishment he is
visiting.
Realism:
the shows includes natural sounds such as busy
restaurants, driving car etc. and lighting where outside scenes are filmed they
typically use sun light.
Dramatization:
The show does not include and staged scenes
this show consists of capturing real feelings and reactions to different types
of food whether liked of disliked and unless the information being put out is
factual nothing else is scripted.
Narrativisation:
Narrativisation is a
documentary set in the style of a story with a beginning, middle and end
however this type of show does not really portray this but if does follower a
show plan which sections the show in a way where they show the establishment/restaurant,
gives a little history about the place and the type of food served preparation and
the tasting of the meals.
